Travel within New Zealand
15 Feb 2017
This week we are going to dive into domestic travel within New Zealand pros and cons for the carious types of moments and how to best move within each ones budget
Intro:
It is common belive that it is cheaper to travel overseas than within our country of New Zealand. Which is true, with the dollar strengthening against the green back while driving our exports up through the roof.
Booking tickets well in advance either domestic/international can save you big dollars allowing you time to save/plan additional activities while on your holiday. Hidden international prices may not include Travel Visa's and additional taxes that may not be relieved until you arrive at your destination. Most airlines nowa days ask to see visa applications (or evidence of) prior to boarding which can save you the embarrsement at the new board and being turned away.
In New Zealand "Grab a Seat' for Air New Zealand has boomed as a quick get away option for those who wish to get out of there comfort zone and gamble by not booking in advance and hoping that seats are available on different flights. This is great should a family or a social event crop up that you hadnt plannned and are willing to take a chance. This option is great for a quick get away for a long weekend/suprise visits, or clicking a box in your bucket list.

Lets look at NZ roading system. In the major cities the roading infrastructure is generaly coping with the masses that communte every day to work as well as the holiday makers that make our GDP spin upwards. However the further South we travel the more basic the infrastructure and limited the roading system becomes. To move from Auckland to Hamilton (127km approx) on a good day would take approx 90min. Do that from Christchurch or Dunedin and that will place you near Rangitata head waters or just south of Omaru.
Local knowldge is always good to have on hand. Do not always rely on technology as it does lack the human factor some time to. Travelling from Queenstown on the Pig Route to the West Coast, some web sites indicate the distance but fail to inform the comsumer on the road conditions, which may be viewed as your Nanas yarn. Tight, windy, and seems to last for ever even thou its 450km. Why should it take so long.?
Over all the NZTA keep a grip on the conditions of the roads even thou when natural disaster strikes (Kaikoura 2016) closes normal routines, opening new ones can be a struggle but generally they are well maintained.
